frequently asked questions

does getting a piercing hurt?

pain levels vary from person to person, but most piercings only cause a quick, sharp pinch that lasts a few seconds. some areas (like cartilage) can feel a bit more pressure or heat, but it’s over fast! we’ll guide you through it and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

do I need an appointment, or do you take walk-ins?

appointment: specific time-slot provided where you will have 30mins with our piercer, they are prioritised over walk ins. these can be great if you want a organised slot where you know our piercer will be available at that time for you.
walk-ins: available during our opening hours but you may have to wait for the piercer to be available, these are great if you're feeling spontaneous and just want to pop in! you can always check our pinned post on instagram @pincushion.piercings for a more detailed description of the differences!

what should I do if my piercing looks infected?

a little redness or crusting is normal, but if you notice heat, throbbing, swelling, discoloured and foul smelling pus or a clear red cut line that extends in a circle past the piercing.
do not remove the jewellery as that can trap the infection. clean gently with saline and contact your piercer and a healthcare professional for antibiotics.

how do I look after my new piercing?

clean your piercing twice a day with sterile saline solution and avoid touching it with unwashed hands. don’t twist, rotate, or remove the jewellery while it’s healing. avoid harsh products (like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide) and make sure to keep hair, makeup, and skincare away from the area. make sure to not get your jewellery caught or pulled on anything!

what should I clean my piercing with?

use a sterile saline spray or solution made specifically for piercings. a simple mix of salt and water at home isn’t always sterile or balanced, so a store-bought sterile saline spray is the safest option. avoid alcohol, antiseptics, or creams as they can cause dryness and irritation.

what materials are safe for body jewellery?

the safest materials are implant-grade titanium, niobium, and solid 14–18k gold. these are hypoallergenic, durable, and suitable for long-term wear. all jewellery we use meets professional safety standards and we have certification to prove it on request.

what if my piercing gets a bump?

piercing bumps can happen for several reasons. irritation, pressure, trauma, or even sleeping on it. avoid touching, picking at it, over cleaning it, leaving it damp, putting makeup or anything other than saline on it. stick to saline spray 1-2 times a day, ensure your jewellery fits correctly, come in for a check-up if it doesn’t settle or if it feels pressured/tight. we can always help identify and treat the cause.

can I go swimming after getting pierced?

avoid swimming in pools, lakes, the sea, or hot tubs until your piercing is healed. these environments contain bacteria that can increase infection risk. If you must swim, cover the area with a waterproof dressing and clean it with saline straight after.

can I change my jewellery early?

it’s best to wait until your piercing is fully healed before changing jewellery. changing it too soon can cause irritation, prolong healing, or even lead to closure. we’re always happy to check it for you and perform the first jewellery change safely in the studio.

can I bring my own jewellery?

for new piercings, we only use verified, implant-grade jewellery that meets professional safety standards. you’re welcome to bring your own for us to change healed piercings if you're struggling to change them by yourself, but if it doesn’t meet our standards, we’ll recommend using something safe from our range.
